A Love letter

Updated: Jun 25

I have fallen irrevocably in love with Chile. What began as a month-long tour through the country’s highlights has transformed into a profound emotional journey. Each destination has captured a piece of my heart, presenting itself as a newfound paradise. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, Chile revealed yet another wonder, gently whispering, "There is still more to discover."

Puerto Natales, a quaint port town, serves as the charming gateway to the rugged splendors of Torres del Paine National Park. With its stunning vistas and adventurous trails, it reminds me of Jackson, Wyoming—a base for the majestic Grand Teton and the vast Yellowstone. Yet, Puerto Natales also brings a taste of home, reminiscent of Cape Cod with its unique culinary offerings.

The wilds of Patagonia stand unmatched, a realm of mystery and untamed beauty. Dramatic landscapes, from jagged Andean peaks to expansive ice fields and serene blue glaciers, evoke a sense of wonder. Even Alaska’s wild frontiers, while similar, do not quite match Patagonia’s dramatic terrain and diverse wildlife, where one might spot guanacos, Andean condors, or even a stealthy puma. Here, the rich Gaucho heritage merges seamlessly with a life oriented around outdoor adventures.

Equally mesmerizing is the Lake General Carrera region, with its rugged mountains, dense forests, and remote wilderness. Whether hiking, fishing, or simply absorbing the vistas, this area offers a tranquil and captivating retreat.

Not far from the urban rush of Santiago lies the lush vineyards of Casablanca Valley, while the quaint village of San Pedro de Atacama offers a stark contrast amidst the vast desert landscapes. Each place, with its unique allure, has woven itself into the fabric of my story.

My lifelong romance with the oceans, mountains, and rivers found its counterpart in Chile. Last year, Homer, Alaska, felt like home to my soul, but Chile—with its wild landscapes and welcoming people—insists that I stay longer, perhaps indefinitely.

The Chileans I've met have deeply influenced me. They are passionate guardians of their heritage, embodying a pride that is tangible. Despite my limited Spanish, we have connected deeply, their expressive eyes and warm gestures breaking down any language barriers. Our interactions, filled with laughter over miscommunications, have revealed a shared ethos and mutual respect that transcends words.

Their spirit is as enduring as the Andean condors circling above, their hearts as expansive as the Patagonian plains, dedicated to preserving their wild, beautiful country. For them, protecting their land is not just a duty but a core part of their identity as Chileans. They see their homeland’s wildness not merely as nature’s masterpiece but as a mirror of their own resilient, indomitable spirit.

In Chile, I discovered new aspects of myself that had only briefly surfaced before. Here, amidst the peaks and plains, I've glimpsed the full portrait of who I am meant to be. This country and its people have not just captured my heart; they have become an indelible part of my soul’s family.
